Bruce and Nancy Montgomery aboard "Seabird" dropped their anchor right next to Dave and Gail Witherill aboard "Pathfinder," several days ago, without either crew knowing there were two NYC boats next to each other. Fortunately, the discovery was made a short time later! Both crews are waiting for a weather window to cross the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas. FOR SUMMER VISITORS
If You Have Accommodations To Offer Make Them Known Now.
With the desire to help those who want to come to this city and vicinity to spend the summer, as well as those who have accommodation to offer, The Journal proposed in a recent issue to publish, free, announcements of houses or cottages to let, or of those who would furnish rooms or board, or both, to summer visitors. It is expected, of course, that such announcements will be concise and will give addresses to which applicants may write, as The Journal cannot undertake to handle the correspondence; and that we should be notified when arrangements are made, that the advertising may be withdrawn. This does not apply to real estate advertising in general, but only to the accommodating of summer visitors. There is special demand for rooms and board with modern conveniences and we should be glad to hear from those who have such accommodations to offer. Now is the time such announcements should be made. We start the directory this week, as follows:
FURNISHED COTTAGE: To let for the season, a 7-room furnished cottage delightfully situated on the North Shore, Northport. Water in the cottage and water closet. Apply to A. A. Howes, Belfast.
[Editor's note: This cottage was known as Hazel Bank and is now owned by Wendy Huntoon, Rasha Huntoon El-Jaroudi and Nadim El-Jaroudi.]

"Zelma and Jo were married on April 23, 1955 in the Columbia University Chapel. The wedding party was an all-Bayside group, including (left to right) Richard Jennings, Jo Huntoon, Zelma Huntoon, Gwen Lopez, Ken Lopez and Susan Woodrow. Jo and Zelma are one of the many Bayside marriages from their generation. According to Jo's oral history 'The summer of 1946, Zelma spent the summer carving her name, address and, I believe, phone number on the wharf, and I moved from Chicago to New Jersey and, looking for someone I knew in the area, copied Zelma's phone number off the wharf and called her up that fall.' Zelma's recollection is similar: 'The thing was, it surprised people up here, because people didn't know that I was seeing Jo also during the winter. His family lived in New Jersey (his stepmother and father). When he'd come down from Bowdoin at Christmas time, he'd call me up and we'd go out together. So we saw each other consistently over those years. Finally, when we decided to get married, he said, 'I just waited, I knew you'd marry me eventually.'" Oral histories for Zelma and Jo, as well as from many other members of the Bayside community, can be found at the new Bayside Historical Society webpage, www.baysidehps.org (go to the Catalog page and look for "Oral history"). "When I was at my home in Hawaii (at 2,500 feet elevation, around 50 degrees F in the morning and around 30-40 at night!), people told me it wasn't a good place to take my 'Burgee Over the Big Island' picture because it didn't really look like the 'Hawaii' people expect. But, honestly, that's what Hawaii was to me. Unexpected, unique, stunning, and life-changing. The connection I felt to the land there is rivaled only by the connection I feel to Bayside. Kumu Paʻa I Ka ʻAina, the name of our program, means 'learning from the land,' or 'the land is the resource of our knowledge.' I love that, in Bayside, at least for me, we really care about and respect the resources we have. I encourage everyone to take that message, connection and inspiration to live sustainably to their permanent residence." E. E. Babcock of Belfast has just completed a stable-garage, 66 by 36 feet, for Ira M. Cobe on the land adjoining his former garage and servants' quarters near Bohemia on the south shore. The building is probably the finest of the kind in this vicinity and has every modern convenience. He will keep his saddle horses and cars there during his stay at Hillside Farms. The building has cement floors, and is finished throughout in hard pine and everything is up-to-date in all details. A cement vegetable cellar is one of the conveniences. The building is to be heated and coal is kept in the attic, with a chute of brick leading to the furnaces.

1915-08-05 Ruggles Park with Post Office

The Republican Journal, August 5, 1915.

A few years ago summer residents of Northport had much trouble with their mails. Letters directed to Northport went to Saturday Cove, the real Northport post office, where they were frequently delayed as the postmaster had no way of knowing if the summer people were stopping on the campground at Temple Heights, Northport, or at Saturday Cove. After considerable discussion it was decided to change the name of the Campground to Bayside. Later it was found that unless letters were addressed Bayside, Waldo County, they went to Bayside, Hancock County. This was worse than going to Saturday Cove, for it took longer to get the letters back. Now it is proposed to make another change and Northport Harbor is suggested.

The Post Office, by whatever name, is seen in the middle beyond the bandstand.

"A 220-ton tug boat took out the entire rigging of the 480-ton travel lift this morning. The cables and straps are a total loss. The picture is kind of far away, but you can see snapped wires, empty pulleys and the guys on the lift using a torch to cut away frayed and jammed cable from one of the turning blocks. Apparently, the BANG when it let go was loud enough to be heard at the harbor entrance and beyond. Amazingly, the tug suffered no damage when it splashed and returned to its port. The rigging has a limited life span, so the replacement is expected, but not this soon. The unit is rated at 440 tons (metric)/485 tons (US), but it is tested at four times its rating. So it should have been able to withstand 2,000 tons. The Front Street crew is baffled. And a little shook up."

Clearly, he, like his mom and his grandparents and his great-grandparents, found Bayside to be quite agreeable!" 2015-11-10 Sailing in the Persian Gulf, photographed by Torben Gøtzsche, submitted by Wendy Huntoon and featuring Wendy's daughter, Rasha El-Jaroudi, sailing on 2015-11-10 Sailing in the Persian Gulf, photographed by Torben Gøtzsche, submitted by Wendy Huntoon and featuring Wendy's daughter, Rasha El-Jaroudi, sailing on "Sydney," a Benetaeu First 45, off of Dubai. Rasha reports: "We race at the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club. The members at DOSC are extremely friendly and welcoming. It's a great club, and I would join if I was here longer! Tuesday nights are pursuit races, and one Friday night a month is the keelboat series. It's amazing being able to sail at least once a week, and, typically, the real skipper plans other outings on the weekends. I'm learning a lot from the crew. Fun Fact: Kiwis call tell tails 'woollies.' Maybe the Northport Yacht Club should rename the newsletter?" If you look carefully, you can see the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, in the background. That's a much different view than on the Penobscot Bay. 2015-11-11 Happy (25th) Birthday, Dan Webster V, pictured here with his dad, Dan Webster IV, skippering his way to first place in a John Short Series race this summer.
