Going from Key West to Mexico via the waters just north of Cuba was a very pleasant run. We have thoroughly enjoyed what we have seen of Central America. This picture was taken when we entered the Rio Dulce in Guatemala. This coming Wednesday (4/8) we have a good weather window to point the bow north toward Mexico. We'll ride the Gulf Stream home as much as we can. Can't wait for a Bayside visit this summer.”2009-04-08 Seabird in Jonesville, Roatan, Honduras, photographed by Nancy (Kelly) Montgomery. “We're about to finish the southbound leg of this season's cruise southward. I don’t know what the delay means for the planned cruise to Key West (looks like they’ll be going to Puerto Rico instead), but you can get lots of interesting detail on the MMA’s website at http://cruise2009.mma.edu/. Click on the “Link To Engine Repair Updates” just above the photo of the ship to get a day-by-day description of what’s been happening.2009-05-13 Short Cruise, photographed by Walter Barnard. “The Maine Maritime Academy training vessel [based in Castine] broke down and is anchored off Searsport, waiting for parts to arrive from Europe.” Through an email exchange with Larry Wade, the ship’s Master, I’ve learned that the parts have arrived and are being installed (article at http://www.bangordailynews.com/detail/105822.html). As of Wednesday evening, the Raw Faith was still there, adding a very mystical quality to the view of the bay, and given that it’s got no engine and a history of breaking down, it may remain for awhile! The ship has an eerie “raised from the deep” look to it, as if she might have been a prop in some horror movie or Pirates of the Caribbean, and she’s apparently created some controversy (especially in her home port of Rockland). New cabinets and counter tops, new floor, new faucet for the sink, new sliding rear wall window, reglazed and painted existing window, nearly new cook stove, improved electrical service, fresh paint on the walls and a real touch of tradition with varnished bead board paneling. All made possible by volunteer labor and largely financed though cash donations and materials.” Many thanks to Dick and Marge Brockway, Art Hall, Steve Kazilionis and Rob Sherman for their time and efforts and to the donors that made this possible.
