Belfast Winter Whoopla (Belfast) A two-day event that offers a wide variety of outdoor and indoor activities, including a Frost & Flannel Dance at the Belfast Boathouse, a Chili Cook-Off and a Pancake Breakfast. Nordic Aquafarms Board of Environmental Protection Hearing (University of Maine's Hutchinson Center, 80 Belmont Avenue, Belfast; 9 AM) The hearing will continue as needed on February 12-14. The entire hearing is open to the public. Daytime sessions will be devoted to testimony from the applicant and the intervenors. Nordic Aquafarms Information

A Norwegian aquafarm company is planning a $150 million salmon farm on 40 acres in Belfast at Little River. The expected annual production capacity of the fully-built facility will equal roughly 8% of total U.S. salmon consumption. The project, which is expected to create 60 jobs, has raised concerns about the amount of potable water to be drawn from the Belfast Water District (1.7 million gallons/day) and the discharges to be made into the Penobscot Bay.
